As part of plans to address future growth in northeastern Ontario, the Independent Electricity System Operator’s (IESO) has identified the need for added capacity in the northeast. Once built, will reinforce the transmission system in northeastern Ontario while supporting the growing electricity demands of industries, businesses and residents.
In addition to meeting growing electricity needs, this new line will strengthen the connection between the northeast and the northwest and improve the overall resiliency of the northern Ontario transmission network. And as part of a series of transmission line work, it will also provide a foundation and reserve the ability for further expansions.
Hydro One is planning to construct a new 500 kilovolt transmission line within an existing right of way between our Hanmer TS and Mississagi TS. The new transmission line will be constructed in parallel to an existing transmission line already in operation within this corridor.
The new Northeast Power Line is approximately 205 km long.
Over the course of the environmental update, we will focus on updating existing data and collecting new data from a variety of sources, conducting environmental surveys and technical assessments, and holding engagement opportunities to gather input and feedback. Through this process, we will ensure our existing data from the previously approved environmental assessment has been brought up to modern standards.
Your feedback is important to help us gather information about the route where this line will be constructed. The feedback we receive is included in the environmental update and considered in the design of the proposed project.
Continuous consultation and engagement also offer opportunities to identify and address potential concerns and issues throughout the planning process to help us ensure the final project is considerate of community interests.
