High Perfomance New Construction

Group of builders discussing plans

Lay the groundwork
for success

Draw on funding at the early stages
of construction or remodeling

Whether you’re breaking ground or breaking down walls, high-efficiency equipment and systems can increase property value and make your building more desirable to owners and tenants. Hydro One can help, with incentives for building owners and design decision-makers for going high efficiency.

Use new technologies that help control costs

LEDs

Interior, exterior, high bay, garage–LED upgrades in all these areas will use 75% less energy, last 25 times longer and can even improve the look of your facility. Incentives are available for lamps, fixtures and lighting controls such as sensors.

VFDs

A variable frequency drive controls the speed of a motor, matching load to need, and potentially saving up to 55% in energy costs. Receive up to $4,835 in incentives, based on upgrade horsepower.

HVAC

Your HVAC system may be your largest energy-saving opportunity: it typically consumes 25-70% of a non-industrial building's monthly electricity. When you install a high-efficiency unitary air conditioner or rooftop unit, you can receive $1,000 or more in incentives, while also cutting costs, improving building comfort and reducing maintenance requirements.

The bigger your project, the bigger your incentives

Choose from per-unit or preset incentives or customize your project calculation

  • Per-unit incentives on these standard replacements for Agribusiness
    • Recirculation ventilation
    • Creep heat pads
    • High temperature cutout thermostat
    • Creep heat controller
    • Low energy livestock waterers
    • Photocell and timer for lighting control
    • Dual and natural exhaust ventilation
  • NOTE: the project minimum to receive Prescriptive incentives is $1,000
  • Download incentive programs overview

If equipment/upgrade is not listed above, you may be eligible for incentives under Engineered or Custom incentive stream.

  • Building owners can receive incentives based on preset calculations that estimate reductions in peak demand and/or electricity consumption after installation of more energy-efficient equipment or solutions.
  • Up to $400 for every kilowatt saved or $0.05/kWh of energy savings for lighting measures
  • Up to $800 for every kilowatt saved or $0.10/kWh of energy saved for non-lighting measures

Incentives are based on energy and demand savings from modelling software results.

Financial incentives for building owners:

  • Up to 25% above Code: $400 for every kilowatt saved OR $0.05/kWh of energy savings
  • Between 25% to 50% above Code: $600 for every kilowatt saved OR $0.075/kWh of energy savings
  • Greater than 50% above Code: $800 for every kilowatt saved OR $0.10/kWh of energy savings
  • Note: CUSTOM projects must be eligible for a minimum of $5,000 in incentives to qualify.

Modelling support:

Simulating energy use at various efficiency levels can help you determine the your best track to energy savings. Get up to 100% of the cost of modelling a building or addition for CUSTOM projects, to a maximum of $10,000.

Financial incentives for design decision-makers:

  • Less than or equal to 25% above Code: $50/kW for every kilowatt saved OR $0.000625/kWh of energy savings
  • Between 25% to 50% above Code: $100 for every kilowatt saved OR $0.0125/kWh of energy savings
  • Greater than 50% above Code: $150 for every kilowatt saved OR $0.01875/kWh of energy savings

Note: CUSTOM projects must be eligible for a minimum of $5,000 in incentives.

  • Design Decision-Maker Agreement (as applicable)
  • ASHRAE Checklist
  • Exhibit E – Reference Building (RB) Modeling Information
  • NECB Building Reference Information
  • Include a building permit showing the date the permit was applied for (“Application Date”)
  • Custom Project Worksheet (used to calculate your incentive amount. Please pay special attention to project description, building energy assumptions and custom incentive calculations)

    For Working Energy Model

    Choose applicable software used:

    • EE4
    • DOE2
    • eQuest
    • CAN-QUEST
    • Energy Pro

    For Simulation Summary Report

    • Include modelling notes to provide a summary of the assumptions used with the modelling software. ALL sections must be completed unless indicated as optional.
    • Include all appendices listed below with your application:
      • Summary Compliance Report

      • Reference Building (RB) modelling information

    For Energy Demand Savings Summary

    • Extract the 8,760 hour energy consumption profile for both the base case and energy efficient case from the approved modelling software

    For documentation of Modelling Costs

    • Upload a copy of the invoice issued to the client, which breaks out the cost of building this energy mode
  • Upload a set of preliminary drawings to the program’s SFTP site. Must be in PDF format. Include architectural, mechanical and electronic drawings and specifications
  • NOTE: if applying for non-electric space cooling/multi-residential suite appliances, please provide appropriate Prescriptive project worksheet (see Prescriptive track in the Program Application Overview & Checklist)
  • After receiving approval, complete your project. Once complete, submit a Post-Project Submission Form. Include invoices, copies of drawings/plans and zoning diagrams. Your cheque will then be processed and mailed to you.
