Why is Hydro One offering the peaksaver PLUS™ program?
Programs like peaksaver PLUS™ can help reduce the strain on our electricity system and the need to import electricity, which will save everyone money by keeping electricity prices low. Additionally, the optional In-Home Display will help you respond to Time-of-Use prices by managing your electricity usage.
Who is eligible to participate?
Hydro One residential customers with central air conditioning that live in single family dwelling (home or townhouse), agree to the terms and conditions and are the homeowners or have the homeowner's written permission to participate. Please note that heat pumps are not eligible for the peaksaver PLUS™ program.

What do I do if I don't own the house? Can I still enrol?
Yes. All you need to do is have the owner of the house provide us with written permission and Hydro One will arrange for the installation of the programmable thermostat.
Are highrise condos or apartments eligible?
No. The peaksaver PLUS™ program is geared to central air conditioning units in residential single family homes. Detached condos are eligible if they contain a single central air conditioning unit per dwelling with ducts to each room.
I am a business customer, am I eligible to enrol?
Yes, provided the programmable thermostat is an appropriate device for your premises or facility. Hydro One will need to have your landlord or property manager's approval to participate. Please arrange to have them contact us to enrol in the program.
How do I sign up?
Will it cost me anything to participate?
No, the programmable thermostat and installation are free of charge to eligible Hydro One customers.
Do I need Internet access to participate?
No. Internet access allows you to program your thermostat remotely, but is not required to participate in the program.
Can I really make a difference by participating?
Yes. By being a peaksaver PLUS™ participant, you will help ease the strain on the electricity grid by allowing us to turn up your thermostat during periods of peak demand. This way, we reduce the need to rely on expensive imported electricity from gas and coal-fired plants.
What do I get for participating?
- A free state-of-the-art programmable thermostat, and installation valued at $250. And it’s web-enabled so you will have the convenience of managing your home temperature from anywhere you have internet access.
- And you could save up to 10% on your year-round heating and cooling electricity consumption.
When can I schedule an appointment?
To schedule an appointment you can call 1-866-380-6051, or sign up online at www.HydroOne.com/peaksaverPLUS. We recommend signing up online, as the process will be faster.
Do I have to be home when the programmable thermostat is installed?
Yes, you will need to be home so that our qualified contractor will be able to install your programmable thermostat.
What are the contractors hours?
Contractors will be installing the programmable thermostats from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday to Friday.
Can I request a morning or afternoon appointment?
Yes. However, you will have to choose an available four hour window.
How does the peaksaver PLUS™ program work?
Hydro One sends a message to your thermostat - through a wireless pager system - to ease up on your central air conditioner by a maximum of 2°C. The programmable thermostat would only be activated on the hottest days from June to September, only on weekdays, and typically between the hours of 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. Hydro One never adjusts your central air conditioner on weekends or holidays. In a typical summer, your programmable thermostat would be activated on average five times to a maximum of 40 hours plus emergencies like a potential blackout.
Won't I be uncomfortable if you raise my air conditioner temperature, especially when it's hot?
Typically, when the temperature adjustment is made between the hours of 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. most people do not even notice that their air conditioner is being adjusted, since it only lasts a short period of time and only up to 2°C. Your air conditioner will continue to run during the control period, but at a higher temperature.
How much energy could the programmable thermostat program potentially save me?
The thermostat can be used for both heating and cooling throughout the year, providing an opportunity to save up to 10% on your heating and cooling energy consumption. You can save more by using your new programmable thermostat to adjust or turn off your air conditioner or heating system remotely when you are not home.
Can I request that my air conditioner not be remotely adjusted for a particular date?
If you would like to opt out on a particular date, please call 1-866-380-6051 and a peaksaver PLUS™ customer service representative will be able to arrange for an exemption.
Will Hydro One adjust my heating in the winter?
Will Hydro One adjust my electric water heater?
No. Currently the program will only adjust your air conditioner, and only during times of high peak demand.
If I am unhappy can I stop being part of the program?
Yes, if for whatever reason you are not happy, please call 1-866-380-6051 to speak to a peaksaver PLUS™ customer service representative to drop out of the program.
