Hydro One's Greener Choices program focuses employee efforts on improving three key areas of environmental performance: fleet, grass roots employee efforts and facilities.
Since its launch in 2008, more than 3,000 employees have participated in programs such as Earth Hour, Earth Week, the Clean Air Commute challenge as well as grass roots programs in communities across Ontario.
Hydro One's fleet has welcomed more hybrid and smaller GHG footprint vehicles to the fleet, encouraging employees to think about the right tool for the job, not bigger is better.
Hydro One is upgrading facilities across the province, making improvements to efficiency where renovations will reduce costs and improve performance in a meaningful way. A pilot project is underway to build a new service centre in Picton, Ontario, to meet
LEED stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design. It is a green building rating system that awards certification for projects that incorporate significant environmental features into the design and construction of building projects. As a 3rd party certification that is verified by the Canada Green Building Council, it helps avoids ‘green washing’ and provides a recognizable standard across the building industry.
Based on a points system where points are awarded for design features and construction methods that exceed conventional practices, one of four levels of certification can be achieved: Certified, Silver, Gold, Platinum. In addition to being awarded points for environmental features and methods, there are a number of prerequisites that must be met to receive any rating. Together the prerequisites and points provide a framework for creating a greener, healthier space. Some of the benefits of a LEED-certified project include: reduced environmental impact from site features, responsible material selections, reduced energy and water consumption and costs, and a healthier and more productive work environment.
