Sioux Lookout Area Aboriginal Management Board

The Hydro One/Sioux Lookout Area Aboriginal Management Board (SLAAMB) Stay in School initiative is a pilot program designed to encourage high school students from the SLAAMB catchment area to complete their Ontario Secondary School Diploma.  The initiative is also designed to encourage students to complete their Grade 12 Mathematics and Grade 12 English requirements for our skilled trades positions.  Hydro One offers positions in various areas and this initiative is also designed to encourage the students to complete their education in order to meet the entrance requirements of colleges and universities that offer the programs that are aligned to Hydro One careers.

SLAAMB has 24 First Nations in its area with most of them being remote and located above the 51st parallel of Canada.  Only three out of the 24 First Nations are accessible by road, with the remaining 21 being remote and only accessible by air.  The Sioux Lookout area covers a vast region of over 200,000 square kilometres.  For more information on the Sioux Lookout Area Aboriginal Management Board please visit their website.

Students

College Consortium Program

Hydro One’s award-winning College Consortium program, a partnership with four Ontario colleges (Algonquin College, Georgian College, Mohawk College and Northern College) was established to prepare students to graduate job-ready and succeed as electrical technicians and technologists at Hydro One.

Hydro One offers scholarships and bursaries, plus “earn while you learn” co-op education and on-the-job learning work terms.  Hydro One recruits from these colleges three times a year.

Through this partnership, Hydro One is bringing its own equipment and technology into college labs and classrooms, and helping develop course curriculum aligned with Hydro One careers.

Over the next four years, a key focus for the College Consortium will be to work towards increasing the representation of First Nation, Métis, Inuit and Urban Aboriginal students in electrical technician and technology programs.  This will help increase the labour pool of qualified Aboriginal candidates applying to the electricity industry and Hydro One upon completion of their program.
