Today Hydro One announces its continued support for women in engineering. For the past four years Hydro One has been an active member and committed $1.4 million dollars towards the Women in Engineering University Partnership with Ryerson University, University of Ontario Institute of Technology, University of Waterloo and Western University.
"We are proud to support programs that encourage young women to consider entering the workforce in non-traditional roles," says Judy McKellar, Executive Vice President and Chief Human Resources Office at Hydro One. "We are a stronger company and able to serve our customers the best when we have a diverse and inclusive workforce, this means helping to pave the way for women considering a career in the engineering and technical trades fields."
Currently in its fourth year, the partnership has developed a comprehensive program aimed at encouraging young women to consider a career in engineering and to support women who are currently working within the engineering field. To date highlights from the program include:
- Tripled the number of applications to Hydro One's New Grad program from female university students
- Increase the number of women enrolled in electrical engineering programs within these universities by 35% and
- Reached 18,650 elementary students through developed education programs
Hydro One supports women in engineering in a series of other programs as well. These programs include:
- The Women in Trades, Technology and Engineering (WTTE) Network, designed for employees, students and young women across the province who are looking to enter or who are currently in non-traditional careers
- The Hydro One Women in Engineering Scholarship which annually grants 10 scholarships to young women wishing to pursue careers in engineering. Recipients receive $5,000 along with an opportunity to work for Hydro One in a paid developmental work placement
- Hydro One has partnered with Men Advocating for Real Change (MARC) Leaders. The network is aimed at promoting workplace inclusion and women's rights, leveraging diversity at Hydro One. MARC Leaders focuses on areas of empowerment, accountability, courage and humility with the goal of creating real change.
The first International Women's Day was held in the early 1900's, and since then, this day has represented an opportunity to celebrate the achievements of women. Hydro One believes in developing a strong and diverse work force and continues to work towards breaking down barriers to women looking to enter the engineering field.
