Barrie Area Transmission Upgrade

Hydro One is committed to energizing life in the communities where we live and work.

As demand for electricity in Barrie and surrounding area continues to grow significantly over the next several years, Hydro One is upgrading aging transmission infrastructure to ensure safe and reliable supply of electricity to the region.

As one of Canada’s fastest growing municipalities, Barrie requires a safe and reliable power supply to meet the growing demands of the region and provide improved services to its homes and businesses. That’s why Hydro One is upgrading critical equipment and transmission infrastructure that is reaching capacity from the Barrie Transformer Station in the City of Barrie to the Essa Transformer Station in the Township of Springwater to ensure power is available for customers now and in the future.

The Barrie Area Transmission Upgrade project consists of three main components

1. Upgrading the current Barrie Transformer Station

Barrie TS is reaching capacity as a 115 kilovolt (kV) station and requires upgrading to a 230 kV station. The station upgrade will require expansion onto adjacent Hydro One owned property.

2. Upgrading existing transmission lines and structures between Barrie TS and Essa TS

The current transmission lines will be upgraded from 115 kV to 230 kV along the existing corridor that runs from Barrie TS to Essa TS. Click here to view the project maps.

The two existing rows of wooden ‘H’ frame structures will be replaced with a single row of new, steel structures along the corridor. These steel structures will be taller to ensure a safe clearance from the ground for the new lines.

3. Refurbishing and upgrading equipment at Essa TS

Plans include installing new equipment and reconfiguring sections of the station to accommodate the upgraded capacity. This work will be within the current station footprint and Essa TS will not require an expansion.

Benefits

The Barrie Area Transmission Upgrade project will offer the following benefits to the local community:

  • Upgrading equipment that is reaching capacity and end-of-life in order to continue to provide a reliable and safe supply of electricity to homes and businesses in the area.
  • Adding capacity to meet the forecasted future electricity demand in the area, including growth in the City of Barrie and the Township of Innisfil.

Construction Begins

Preliminary activities to begin construction on the line began in March 2023 and will be completed by Hydro One's contractor, Métis Free Trader-Voltage Power Joint Venture (MVP). We know a critical part of electricity planning is ensuring that community members are informed and know what to expect during the construction of this project.

Project Need

The need for this project was identified in the Barrie / Innisfil Sub-Region Integrated Regional Resource Plan (IRRP), prepared by the Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO). The IRRP was completed in December 2016 and confirmed the need for the Barrie Area Transmission Upgrade project to replace critical aging transmission infrastructure. Once completed, the upgraded transmission line will bring additional power flow and improve capacity and service to Barrie and the surrounding region.

Please review the regional planning section for more information.
