Lambton to Longwood Transmission Upgrade
Project Description and Need
Based on recommendations by the Ontario Power Authority (OPA), Hydro One is planning to upgrade a 70-kilometre section of an existing double-circuit 230 kilovolt transmission line in southwestern Ontario. The line, as shown on the map below, connects the Lambton Transformer Station (TS) in the Township of St. Clair with Longwood TS in the Municipality of Strathroy-Caradoc.

The Lambton to Longwood Transmission Upgrade is one of five priority transmission system projects identified in Ontario's Long-Term Energy Plan (LTEP). The project, scheduled for completion by 2014, is required to increase the capacity of the transmission system west of London to carry additional power from renewable, gas and other sources. This additional capacity on the grid will contribute toward meeting provincial energy supply targets for installed non-hydroelectric renewable generation by 2018.
The project will involve replacing the conductor (wire) with higher-capacity wire and installing new insulators on the existing transmission structures. It is expected that all work can be carried out within the existing right-of-way.
