May 15, 2012 | Hydro One begins Lower Mattagami Transmission Reinforcement Project

Hydro One is starting work on its Lower Mattagami Transmission Reinforcement Project. The project will improve the reliability and quality of electricity service in the area, while ensuring adequate capacity on the transmission system to carry the additional 440 megawatts of power being installed by Ontario Power Generation (OPG) at its Little Long, Smoky Falls, Harmon and Kipling generating stations northeast of Kapuskasing.

Hydro One’s project involves installing a second 230 kilovolt (kV) circuit on the existing 4.5 kilometre transmission right-of-way between Harmon Generating Station (GS) and Kipling GS.

Hydro One crews will install two new anchor towers and modify eleven existing towers on this section of the right-of-way to make the structures capable of carrying two electricity circuits. The project also includes constructing new line taps on the existing Hydro One right-of-way near Smoky Falls GS and at Little Long Switching Station.

Hydro One is working closely with OPG and its contractor to coordinate construction activities. The majority of the transmission line reinforcement field work is expected to be complete by the end of 2012. OPG expects to complete its project in 2015.

June 7, 2010 | Ontario Power Generation announces construction of the Lower Mattagami project

Ontario Power Generation announced they will begin construction of the Lower Mattagami Project (PDF - OPG press release). To accommodate the upgrade to the Lower Mattagami hydroelectric generating stations, Hydro One will upgrade the existing 230kV transmission line by adding a second 230kV circuit and modifying some of the existing transmission towers in order to incorporate the additional generation. Construction of the line is scheduled to begin in 2011.
