Wood Pole Replacement

Improving reliability in your community through our annual work program.

Hydro One owns and operates Ontario's 29,000 km high-voltage transmission network and 123,000 km distribution network that delivers electricity across the province. This network consists of approximately 1.6 million wood pole structures. Over time, these wood poles can weaken due to poor weather conditions, insects, birds, and wildlife.

Hydro One undertakes a pole testing program on an annual basis. Wood pole structures that have reached their end-of-life or are degraded due to insect activity, decomposition, or woodpecker activity are marked for replacement as part of this ongoing wood pole testing program. Replacing damaged and aging wood pole structures will ensure continued reliability and integrity of our transmission lines and the electricity supply.
