Ontario Hydro Services Company becomes Hydro One

Ontario Hydro Services Company (OHSC) has become Hydro One - a new name that typifies the company as it enters a new era in the Ontario electricity marketplace.

"Hydro One takes the word that is synonymous with electricity in Ontario and marries it with the idea of being the best in the energy delivery business, putting the customer first, and being the first and only company to deliver power right across the province," explained Hydro One Chairman Sir Graham Day. "Our new name embodies the essential nature of the service we provide and the excellence with which our employees deliver that service."

Sir Graham said the decision to change the company’s identity was a difficult one. "The Ontario Hydro name invokes proud feelings with our employees and the people of Ontario. But we are no longer the Ontario Hydro that people grew up with. We are moving ahead on our own merits. Hydro One demonstrates a break from the past, while honouring the legacy. It speaks to our core values of dependability, accountability, reliability and operational excellence as well as a promising future."

Hydro One Inc., one of Canada’s major corporations, is a family of companies. The subsidiaries include Hydro One Networks Inc., Hydro One Telecom Inc., Hydro One Remote Communities Inc., Hydro One Markets Inc., and Ontario Hydro Energy Inc. A key component of its business strategy is to leverage its existing assets and competencies in infrastructure management and move them into the competitive arena.

The largest subsidiary is Hydro One Networks which owns and manages all the former Ontario Hydro Services Company high voltage transmission and low voltage distribution assets. These assets deliver electricity to almost every community in the province, including 934,000 end-use customers.

With one of the largest fibre optic networks in the province, Hydro One Telecom leases excess capacity to telecommunications providers.

Hydro One Markets acquires electricity for Hydro One Networks standard supply customers, and Hydro One Remote Communities services Northern Ontario communities that are not connected to the Ontario power grid.

Ontario Hydro Energy is a competitive retail subsidiary in the Hydro One family of companies. Servicing residential customers under the name ‘Onsource’, it provides savings and innovative billing services for essential home services such as energy, telephone long distance and water heater rental, as well as home improvement. Ontario Hydro Energy also helps commercial and industrial customers improve profitability through energy related products and management services.

Hydro One Inc. is a holding company that operates through its subsidiaries involved in electricity transmission and distribution, telecom and energy services.
