Archives WESTERN NAMES NEW CHANCELLOR Extraordinary business and community leader Eleanor Clitheroe has been named the new Chancellor of The University of Western Ontario. As Western’s eighteenth Chancellor, Clitheroe will serve as an ambassador of the University and will play a key role in promoting Western as a leader in learning both in Canada and abroad. Her term will run until 2004. Clitheroe is President and Chief Executive Officer of Hydro One Inc., a holding company with electricity transmission and distribution, telecom and energy services businesses. Her executive career began at the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce where she was Vice-President, Global Treasury and then Vice-President, Corporate Treasury. Following a term as Deputy Minister of Finance with the Ontario government, she joined Ontario Hydro as Senior Vice-President and Chief Financial Officer and as a member of the Ontario Hydro Board of Directors. A native of Montreal, Clitheroe is a director of the Nature Conservancy of Canada, a member of the Federal Standards Advisory Board, director of the Conference Board of Canada, director of the St. Joseph’s Hospital Foundation, trustee of the Wildlife Preservation Trust, and director of the International Institute for Sustainable Development. She also sits on the board of several corporations including Dofasco Inc., TD Bank Financial Group, Alcan Aluminum Ltd. and INCO Ltd. Clitheroe has several connections to Western. She has served as a member of the Richard Ivey Alumni Board and is on Western’s Campaign Cabinet. She received her bachelor of common law degree from Western in 1977 and a master’s of business administration from Western in 1980. She also received a bachelor of civil law degree from McGill University in 1978. "With her stellar business career and continuous community involvement, Eleanor Clitheroe will make an excellent ambassador for Western. I am simply thrilled that she has agreed to serve as our Chancellor," says Carol McAulay-Weldon, Chair of Western’s Board of Governors. "Eleanor Clitheroe has demonstrated a strong commitment to Western and will be a superb spokesperson for the importance of higher education in this country," says Dr. Paul Davenport, Western’s President and Vice-Chancellor. "The University community will be very honored and proud to have her as our Chancellor." Clitheroe will be officially installed as Chancellor at Fall Convocation on Oct. 26, 2000.
