Restoration Efforts Continue

Toronto, Oct. 15, 2003 - High winds starting early this morning gusting up to 90 kilometres an hour have caused many power outages affecting over 100,000 Hydro One customers across Ontario.

About 250 lines, forestry and stations crews have been mobilized and deployed to the damaged areas. As of 7 p.m., 25,000 customers were still without power. Most customers will have their power restored by midnight. Some customers in hard-hit and remote areas will not have power restored until tomorrow.

The winds have inflicted substantial tree damage from the southwest near Simcoe and Beachville, across the Penetang, Muskoka, Huntsville, Newmarket and Bowmanville areas, further east including Minden, Fenelon Falls, Peterborough, Tweed and Bancroft and as far north as Nippissing.

Wind is still causing damage to Hydro One's lines and customers continue to call about new outages. High winds are also hampering restoration efforts.

The public is advised to stay well away from downed power lines, trees and branches.

Hydro One Networks owns and operates the province-wide electricity high voltage transmission network and largest low voltage distribution system in Ontario that serves over one million end-use customers. Hydro One is wholly-owned by the provincial government.
