Hydro One closely monitoring system for solar storm impact

Toronto, Oct. 29, 2003 - Hydro One is closely monitoring its transmission system for any signs of disturbance that might be caused by the solar storm that is underway. No outages are expected to result from the storm and no reports of problems have been reported by any utility members of the Northeast Power Coordinating Council.

As a precaution, some scheduled maintenance work on the transmission system has been deferred.

Solar storms are regular occurrences and Hydro One is experienced in handling the effects typically associated with the geomagnetic disturbances caused by the storms. These effects can include momentary fluctuations in voltage and false tripping of equipment.

Hydro One will continue to monitor its system around the clock for any anomalies.

Hydro One Networks owns and operates Ontario's 28,400 kilometre high-voltage transmission network that delivers electricity to large industrial customers and municipal utilities, and a 122,000 kilometre low-voltage distribution system that serves about 1.2 million end-use customers and smaller municipal utilities in the province. Hydro One is wholly owned by the Ontario Government.
