Hydro One spending about $500,000 improving reliability in Clarington

March 30, 2006 - Hydro One is spending about $500,000 improving power delivery reliability in Clarington. This will upgrade supply to Hydro One customers and Veridian which serves Orono and Bowmanville.

The project involves replacing approximately 400 insulators on major 44,000 volt circuits throughout Clarington, and an additional 400 insulators on lower voltage lines serving Hydro One customers from its Park Road Distribution Station in Courtice. In addition, 12 new lightning arrestors that protect the circuit from lightning damage will be installed along with a series of "electrical fault indicators". The fault indicators will result in faster power restoration by identifying location of an electrical fault (e.g. tree on a line). This allows crews to get to the site of the actual cause in a shorter time period.

The work began mid-January, and is expected to be completed mid-April. All the work is being done "live line" with the power on, eliminating the need to interrupt service to customers.

"This project will significantly upgrade overall reliability in these areas and addresses some local concerns about outages over the last year," said Hydro One Customer Operations Manager Dave Page. "We are listening to our customers, and taking steps to address their needs. This work is a reflection of Hydro One's commitment to investing in its power delivery system and providing a high level of service."

Over the past five years Hydro One has invested about $4.5 billion in capital projects and maintenance to sustain and upgrade its high-voltage transmission and low-voltage distribution systems throughout the province. It plans to invest an additional $5.5 billion in system maintenance and upgrades over the next five years.

Hydro One delivers electricity safely, reliably and responsibly to homes and businesses across the province of Ontario and owns and operates Ontario's 28,000 kilometre high-voltage transmission network that delivers electricity to large industrial customers and municipal utilities, and a 125,000 kilometre low-voltage distribution system that serves about 1.3 million end-use customers and smaller municipal utilities in the province. Hydro One is wholly owned by the Ontario Government.
