Hydro One builds new line to improve supply to Parry Sound area

April 20, 2007 — Hydro One is constructing a new 44,000 volt (44 kilovolt or kV) line and installing a new circuit breaker at the Parry Sound Transformer Station that will improve supply reliability to Parry Sound and surrounding area.

The $1.4 million project, scheduled for completion by the end of June, will ensure the town has its own dedicated line, as will areas east on Highway 124 and north and south on Highway 69. This will provide much greater flexibility in power supply since if there are problems on any of these circuits, electrical load can be transferred to one of the other lines with no impact on customers.

As part of the project Hydro One will be taking a planned outage April 29 from 8 a.m. to 9:15 a.m. affecting about 10,000 customers in townships of McDougall, Carling, Ferguson, Hagerman, Croft, Burton, McKenzie, Wallbridge, Henvey, Ferrie, Burpee, and Spence. This interruption also includes the Town of Parry Sound, Wal-Mart and the hospital.

"This project will significantly upgrade overall reliability in the area," said Hydro One Parry Sound Customer Operations Manager Wayne Dillabough. "It's a reflection of Hydro One's commitment to investing in its power delivery system and providing a high level of service to customers."

The company will be conducting work on one of the three 44 kV lines serving the area from April 29 to May 12. During this period the area will only be supplied by two lines, and Hydro One is requesting all customers reduce their demand for electricity as much as possible to minimize strain on the system.

Hydro One owns and operates Ontario's 28,400 kilometre high-voltage transmission network that delivers electricity to large industrial customers and municipal utilities, and a 122,000 kilometre low-voltage distribution system that serves about 1.3 million end-use customers and smaller municipal utilities in the province. Hydro One is wholly owned by the Province of Ontario.
