Efficiency Award November 29, 2007 Hydro One congratulates
St. Marys Cement of Bowmanville, Ontario for winning the ecoEnergy Efficiency
Award given out by the Government of Canada for innovation in energy efficiency. St. Marys took part in several Hydro One Conservation and Demand Management
(CDM) programs to improve efficiency of its electricity use. Hydro One's
CDM program provides a range of incentives to help customers save electricity
and money, and ease strain on the provincial electricity grid during peak
demand periods. "We are delighted to see St. Marys Cement recognized for its environmental
leadership and are pleased to be partners in this powerful conservation
initiative," said Giuliana Rossini, Director, Strategy and Conservation.
"Through our industrial audit program, we work in partnership with
our customers to promote a conservation culture in Ontario and at the
same time help our customers reduce their electricity costs." St. Marys participated in three separate Hydro One's CDM programs. Through
the Industrial Audit program, facilitated by Hatch Energy, St. Marys instituted
a formal energy training and awareness program on site and implemented
substantial energy savings as a result. St. Marys also took part in Hydro
One's Double Return Program which provides a cash incentive to customers
for actions they take reducing peak energy usage. Finally, St. Marys is
involved in Hydro One's Energy Retrofit Incentive Program (ERIP) and will
receive incentives for energy efficiency lighting retrofits. In 2006 Hydro One's CDM initiatives resulted in energy savings of 100
million kilowatt-hours (kWhs), with approximately 880,000 people having
participated in one or more programs. This participation has resulted
in the expected electricity savings over the lifetime of installed energy
efficient equipment of 635 million kWhs, or annual consumption of over
53,000 homes. In addition to energy savings, the demand for electricity
during peak periods has been reduced by about 50 megawatts, or the average
peak demand of almost 17,000 homes. Hydro One delivers electricity safely, reliably and responsibly to homes and businesses across the province of Ontario and owns and operates Ontario's 29,000 kilometre high-voltage transmission network that delivers electricity to large industrial customers and municipal utilities, and a 122,000 kilometre low-voltage distribution system that serves about 1.3 million end-use customers and smaller municipal utilities in the province. Hydro One is wholly owned by the Province of Ontario. - 30 - For more information contact: |
