A band of snow, ice, and high winds hit most of Ontario in March 2016, causing widespread outages and damage in the process. Nearly 105,000 Hydro One customers were affected at the peak of the storm.

Hydro One crews responded rapidly and worked over a five-day period to restore service for customers.

Restoration efforts consisted of repairing and replacing distribution lines that had been destroyed or damaged during the storm, including the replacement of 245 poles and 136 transformers.

The international award, which was announced June 13, is presented biannually to EEI-member companies to recognize their efforts in restoring service to customers after disruptions caused by severe weather conditions or other natural events.

"The tireless work by Hydro One's crews to restore service following Ontario's winter storm last year exemplifies our industry's commitment to customer service," said Tom Kuhn, EEI President.
