Our 175 employees were hard at work for 10 days restoring power to the people of Florida after Hurricane Irma pummeled the region.

Since crews arrived on Thursday, September 14, Hydro One successfully restored power to more than 10,000 Florida residents. Our crews safely arrived home on Monday, September 25 after a 2,300+ kilometre journey.

We were part of Florida Power and Light's (FPL's) historic effort to restore an unprecedented number of outages for a U.S. utility. Over the course of two weeks, utilities from across the North Atlantic Mutual Assistance Group helped to restore power to more than 4.4 million FPL customers.

Marc Clement, Supervisor for Zone 6 in Ontario, reported that crews were mainly working southwest of Miami, where they were stationed until power was restored and they were relocated to another area.

Despite the hot and humid weather, Marc says the crews' morale remained high. Their passion was fuelled by the encouragement from the people whose homes and businesses regained power thanks to their efforts. Residents of these communities have shared their gratitude on social media and in letters. They also thanked our employees in person and, in some cases, supplied them with bottles of water to beat the heat.

Hydro One set up online fundraising pages to encourage employees to donate directly to the Canadian Red Cross Hurricane Irma and Hurricane Harvey appeals. Employees donated more than $10,300 and $3,000 to Hurricane Irma and Hurricane Harvey relief efforts, respectively.  Hydro One is matching donations made by employees dollar for dollar up to $200 each.
