Rate relief

Ontario government announces off-peak pricing during COVID-19

Providing customers with rate relief

The Government of Ontario has introduced temporary hydro rate relief for Ontario electricity customers during the COVID-19 pandemic.

On March 24, 2020, the government announced it would temporarily reduce Time-of-Use (TOU) pricing to an off-peak flat rate to lighten the burden on people while staying at home to slow the spread of COVID-19. While Hydro One and other Ontario utilities are regulated to adhere to TOU pricing, Hydro One had been working with the industry and government to offer customers relief during this difficult time.

Currently, the Ontario Energy Board’s Time-of-Use electricity rates range from 10 cents per kilowatt hour (kWh) to nearly 21 cents per kWh during daylight hours, Monday through Friday.

For the duration of this relief program, customers will automatically pay a flat rate of 10.1 cents per kWh. This is expected to reduce the monthly bill of a typical Hydro One residential customer by 14.6 per cent.

Hydro One is glad to be applying this change to customers’ bills. The government has announced these temporary rates be in effect for a period of 45 days.

This change does not require customers to take any action, as it will be automatically applied to customers’ monthly bills.

Hydro One’s recently announced Pandemic Relief Fund also offers increased payment flexibility and financial assistance to customers experiencing financial hardship as a result of COVID-19. To learn more about Hydro One’s Pandemic Relief Fund, visit www.HydroOne.com/ReliefFund.
