Hydro One is initiating a Class Environmental Assessment (EA) for transmission line work required to accommodate a greater refurbishment project at Wingham Transformer Station (TS), required to continue meeting power demands in the area. This will include the replacement of power transformers which are approaching their end-of-life, as well as other electrical station equipment. This work will take place within the existing station footprint.
To accommodate this station work, some reconfiguration of the transmission lines is required. The proposed line work consists of the installation of four new, replacement of two, and removal of four existing steel lattice structures (towers) to the east of the station fence. Where possible, access would be accomplished using existing roads.
Class Environmental Assessment (EA)
The Wingham Transformer Station Refurbishment Project is subject to the
Class Environmental Assessment for Minor Transmission Facilities (Hydro One, 2016), in accordance with the
Ontario Environmental Assessment Act. The map below shows the proposed scope of work and general work area for the project.

Consultation with elected officials, municipal representatives, government agencies, Indigenous communities, interest groups and the public is an important part of the Class EA process.
As part of the consultation process, a
Notice of Commencement was sent to project stakeholders.
Contingent on the outcome of the Class EA process, construction could begin in fall 2020 and be completed by the end of 2022.
