Load Displacement

Thinking of using your own generated electricity to reduce your bill? Our Load Displacement program could help you achieve that goal.

As defined by the Ontario Energy Board's Distribution System Code, load displacement refers to a generation facility connected on the customer side of the connection point, where the output is used or intended to be used exclusively for the customer’s own consumption with no electricity being exported back into the utility grid.

How it works

Load displacement allows customers to reduce their energy consumption by utilizing renewable generation technologies, offsetting their use of Hydro One’s grid power. By generating electricity on-site, customers can:

  • Offset their load consumption by using their own generation

  • Reduce electricity costs

Key Requirements for Load Displacement

The customer's responsibilities are outlined in Section 3.4.3 of our Conditions of Service.

Read our Conditions of Service

  • Metering: A bi-directional meter is essential to ensure there is no export of energy into the grid.

  • Single Line Diagram (SLD): A Single Line Diagram (SLD) must be submitted to Hydro One to visually represent the electrical layout of the load displacement system. This diagram should show connections such as Hydro One’s demarcation point, the generation facility, inverter, PCS, and the customer’s load as applicable. View sample SLDs for projects up to 10 kW (MicroDER) and greater than 10 kW.

Getting connected

NOTE: Applicants are cautioned not to incur any expenses until we approve to connect the proposed generation facility.

For customers interested in applying for the Load Displacement program, please contact our Dx Generation Connections Group at 1.877.447.4412 or email us prior to submitting a completed Form C - Micro Generation Connection Application (for projects 10 kW or less in size) or a Form B - Connection Impact Assessment Form (for projects greater than 10 kW in size).

Important information about your generation connection and transformer sizing

Please review the Technical Interconnection Requirements (TIR) – Micro Generation & Small Generation, 3-phase, less than 30 kW and Generation Transformer Guide. You may incur additional costs for your connection according to your existing transformer size and the amount of generation you propose to install. For more information, please refer to the TIR or contact us.

Customer choice for load displacement customers

You now have more choice when it comes to your electricity price plan. Choose between Tiered, Time-of-Use (TOU) or the Ultra-Low Overnight (ULO) price plan. Learn more about these price plans.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do I need a bi-directional meter if I am not exporting to the grid?

A bi-directional meter tracks both the energy you consume from the grid and the energy you generate on-site. It allows Hydro One to monitor that no energy is being sent back to the grid, preventing any potential hazards.

Is export allowed with load displacement?

No. Export to the grid is prohibited.

Where can I get more information about the Home Renovation SavingsTM Program (HRSP) rebate?

A joint offering of Enbridge Gas, the IESO's Save ON Energy program and the Ontario Government, details about the program can be found on their website at www.homerenovationsavings.ca.
