We’re in your community working to improve reliability.

A team is only as good as its people. From our planners to our trained arborists, technicians, mechanical operators and herbicide applicators, our team plays an important role managing one of the leading causes of service interruptions: vegetation.

Did you know that in your area, 62% of the power outages we respond to are tree-related?*

With more than 150,000 circuit-kilometres of power lines across the province, line maintenance is a top priority. We’re completing tree trimming more often to help address this.

Between vegetation maintenance and infrastructure upgrades, we’re making changes to better assist your community. Learn more about our recent work in this short video.

How we're improving

The following outlines some of the changes we’re making to serve your community better, including upcoming work programs that we have planned for the area to reduce service interruptions and improve reliability.

Changes to Vegetation Management
  • We’ve taken a new approach along our distribution system that will include shorter vegetation maintenance cycles focused on improved public safety and service reliability.

  • Previously, our full corridor right-of-way clearing was completed every 8-10 years; this new approach adheres to a 3-year maintenance cycle which results in better reliability on more kilometres of our distribution system throughout the province at no additional cost.

Distribution System Enhancements
  • Our distribution modernization program includes installing new Communicating Fault Circuit Indicators (CFCIs) and Remote-Operable Load Break Switches (LBSs).

  • These CFCIs communicate fault data to our Distribution Management System (DMS) at our Ontario Grid Control Centre. As a result, DMS Controllers are able to calculate the location of a fault. By dispatching field crews to the calculated location, we are able to reduce outage duration and get the lights on sooner for our customers.

  • LBSs enable us to perform isolation and switching, work traditionally completed by a field crew, remotely from our Ontario Grid Control Centre. This significantly reduces the amount of time it takes us to isolate a fault, allowing our crews to immediately focus on restoration efforts.

Forestry Work

In 2018, 780 kilometres of line was maintained in the Huntsville area. 533 kilometres of this work was focused on the feeders near Emsdale, Sprucedale and Magnetawan.

In 2019, 815 kilometres of line will be cleared in the Huntsville area. 533 kilometres of this work will be focused on the feeders near Emsdale, Sprucedale and Magnetawan.

Distribution Modernization

Over 150 load break switches (LBSs) were installed across the province in 2018. This year, 10 remote-operable load break switches and 59 communicating faulted circuit indicators (CFCIs) will be installed on the feeders in your area.
