Move large vessels safely

Ensure safe, uninterrupted transport of your oversized loads across Ontario

How to start vessel move

Do you need a large vessel move?

Transporting a large vessel across our service territory? You're likely travelling through parts of our Transmission or Distribution network. In order to ensure safe, uninterrupted travel that does not affect our network, a large vessel move request is required.

Based on the size of your load, we may be required to raise lines, disconnect lines, or make changes to infrastructure to provide adequate clearances for safe transport.

If your load exceeds 14.2 feet (4.32 meters) in height, you’ll need to arrange a Large Vessel Move. This ensures your safety and prevents damage to Hydro One’s infrastructure during transport. Planning ahead helps avoid delays and keeps Ontario’s power network reliable.

Large vessel move process

Step 1
Application and pre-payment

After receiving your fully completed application, we will review the information submitted and provide you with a pre-payment contract.

Step 2
Route review

Once the pre-payment contract has been returned, we will schedule our crews to review your route to determine the extent of Hydro One’s participation.

Step 3
Route determination

We will provide you with the results of our route review. If Hydro One’s participation is required, we will send you an agreement to participate contract.

Step 4
Payment and obligations

Once we have received your signed contract and payment, we will prepare for our participation in the move on a mutually agreed upon date.

Step 5
Move day

Coordinated Hydro One crews will assist you by raising or disconnecting our line while your vessel travels through our service territory.

Step 6
Reconciliation of costs

We will review Hydro One’s actual costs associated with your move and provide you with an invoice or credit outlining the difference in costs.

What happens after you submit your application

After reviewing your application, Hydro One will make a preliminary determination of the complexity of your move. This complexity will be confirmed during our route review process.

Based on the complexity of your move, Hydro One’s timeframes will vary:

Basic move
  • Hydro One will try to review your route within 15 business days. If we need more time, we will let you know.
  • Once the agreement is signed and all requirements are met, Hydro One needs 30 business days to get ready for the move.
  • The move will happen on a date we both agree on.
Complex move
  • Hydro One will try to review your route within 20 business days. If we need more time, we will let you know.
  • After the agreement is signed and all requirements are met, up to 60 business days are needed to prepare for the move.
  • The move will happen on a date we both agree on.
