Overview

We’re dedicated to fostering growth in northeastern Ontario. The Northeast Power Line will meet the increasing demand for energy that is driven by innovation and economic development. This new line will bring more power to the region and improve the overall resilience of the northeastern Ontario transmission network. As part of the company's pathway towards Reconciliation, Hydro One will offer proximate First Nations impacted by the project a 50 per cent equity stake in the transmission line component of the project and is committed to working to advance the project in partnership.

When completed, the 500 kilovolt line between Hanmer Transformer Station (Greater Sudbury) and Mississagi Transformer Station (near Wharncliffe) will reinforce the transmission system in northeastern Ontario while supporting the growing electricity demands of industries, businesses and residents.

Our planning process

We will complete the planning and development of this new transmission line following an existing, approved environmental assessment (EA) from Hanmer Transformer Station to Mississagi Transformer Station. We’re performing an environmental update that includes consultation and engagement with indigenous communities, stakeholders, and conducting technical field surveys (including archaeology and natural heritage surveys) along that transmission corridor to ensure compliance with current standards.

Frequently asked questions

What is the need for this new transmission line?

As part of plans to address future growth in northeastern Ontario, the Independent Electricity System Operator’s (IESO) has identified the need for added capacity in the northeast. Once built, will reinforce the transmission system in northeastern Ontario while supporting the growing electricity demands of industries, businesses and residents.

In addition to meeting growing electricity needs, this new line will strengthen the connection between the northeast and the northwest and improve the overall resiliency of the northern Ontario transmission network. And as part of a series of transmission line work, it will also provide a foundation and reserve the ability for further expansions.

What is the route for Northeast Power Line?

Hydro One is planning to construct a new 500 kilovolt transmission line within an existing right of way between our Hanmer TS and Mississagi TS. The new transmission line will be constructed in parallel to an existing transmission line already in operation within this corridor.

How long is the proposed line?

The new Northeast Power Line is approximately 205 km long.

How will my feedback be used?

Over the course of the environmental update, we will focus on updating existing data and collecting new data from a variety of sources, conducting environmental surveys and technical assessments, and holding engagement opportunities to gather input and feedback. Through this process, we will ensure our existing data from the previously approved environmental assessment has been brought up to modern standards. Your feedback is important to help us gather information about the route where this line will be constructed. The feedback we receive is included in the environmental update and considered in the design of the proposed project.

Continuous consultation and engagement also offer opportunities to identify and address potential concerns and issues throughout the planning process to help us ensure the final project is considerate of community interests.

Land acknowledgement

Hydro One acknowledges that the Northeastern projects are situated upon the Robinson Huron Treaty Territory, signed with the Anishinaabe Nation and is now home to many diverse Indigenous people. Hydro One understands that Indigenous Nations have been here since time immemorial and are stewards to what many refer to as (Mkinaak Minising) or Turtle Island. We are all Treaty People and with a commitment to friendship and our pursuit of reconciliation, we are thankful to be welcomed on these lands as partners in our shared future so we can improve on our past and energize our combined path forward.
