Powering northern Ontario is an important part of Hydro One's past and future.

Project Overview

Powering northern Ontario is an important part of Hydro One's past and future. To ensure continued supply of reliable power to the region, Hydro One, the province's largest electricity transmitter, is undertaking a Class Environmental Assessment (EA) to refurbish its existing115 kilovolt (kV) transmission infrastructure on circuits A7L, R1LB and A6P. This transmission line runs between Hydro One's Lakehead Transformer Station (TS) located in the Municipality of Shuniah and Alexander Generating Station (GS) located in the District of Thunder Bay (Unorganized).

The proposed project would involve maintenance activities, such as the modification and/or replacement of steel lattice and wood pole structures and foundations, and replacement of conductor (wire) and insulators along the existing right of way.

Class Environmental Assessment (EA)

The Lakehead TS to Alexander GS Transmission Line Refurbishment project is subject to the Class Environmental Assessment for Minor Transmission Facilities (2022), in accordance with the Ontario Environmental Assessment Act. The Class EA is a streamlined planning process that has proven effective in ensuring minor transmission projects that have a predictable range of effects have feasible environmental mitigation and/or protection measures in place. The Class EA Process contains screening provisions that may apply to this project.

Consultation with elected officials, municipal representatives, government agencies, Indigenous communities, interest groups and the public is an important part of the Class EA process.

Public Consultation

Hydro One hosted a Community Information Centre on Wednesday, November 27, 2019 in the Municipality of Shuniah, where members of the public were invited to learn more about the Lakehead TS to Alexander GS Transmission Line Refurbishment Project. Members of our project team were available to provide information, answer questions, and take feedback.
