Region Overview

The Greater Toronto Area (GTA) West Region covers the Regional Municipalities of Halton and Peel, comprising the Municipalities of Brampton, South Caledon, Halton Hills, Mississauga, Milton and Oakville. The region is divided into two sub-regions: 

  • Northern Sub-region: This area roughly covers the Municipalities of Brampton, Milton, Halton Hills, and southern part of Caledon. The population of this sub-region is over 700,000 and has been rapidly growing over the past 10 years. 

  • Southern Sub-region:This sub-region comprises the municipalities of Mississauga and Oakville.

Current Status

The third regional planning cycle for this region was kicked off in May 2024 beginning with the Needs Assessment (NA). The NA report for this region was completed in August 2024 followed by releasing of Scoping Assessment in November 2024 by IESO. It identified the needs in the region and recommended that further regional coordination is required, which will be reviewed during the next phases of regional planning cycle.
