Building a smarter grid

“Flexibility” refers to a customer’s ability to alter consumption patterns through load curtailment, energy storage, or generation.

Our Flexibility Initiative is designed to leverage and incentivize flexibility through Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) to meet increasing electricity system needs on certain days, at certain times, and in certain localities.

Today, we’re building a smarter grid by partnering with C&I customers, Aggregators and Energy Management Providers to offer a more efficient and affordable solution to help us address these pressing localized needs.

The traditional approach to building the grid is to upgrade infrastructure to address peak demand. However, similar to the snow at the top of a mountain, where peaks above capacity occur just a few times a year, NWS can be a smarter and more affordable approach to providing more reliable electricity by incentivizing customers to change their behaviour to off-peak hours. This effectively melts the snow peak.

What type of flexible solutions is Hydro One seeking?

We are looking for C&I customers, Aggregators or Energy Management Providers who can leverage existing assets to alter consumption patterns on certain days, at certain hours, in certain locations via:

Controllable load

Shifting operating hours (behavioural change) and load curtailment (dispatchable demand response assets like controllable HVAC).

Behind the Meter (BTM) Energy Storage or Generation

Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) and dispatchable generation like natural gas backup generators.
