Building a stronger grid for Ontario's future

Project overview

We're dedicated to fostering growth in northeast Ontario. Once built, the Northeast Power Line will meet the increasing demand for energy that is driven by innovation and economic development. This new line will bring more power to the region and strengthen the northern Ontario transmission network.

When completed, the 500-kilovolt line between Hanmer Transformer Station (TS) in Greater Sudbury and Mississagi TS near Wharncliffe will support the growing electricity demands of industries, businesses and residents.

Guided by standards

Planning process

The environmental process for this project has involved the completion of several technical studies as well as engagement with Indigenous communities, government agencies, interest groups and interested community members. The findings are published in an Environmental Report. On October 22, 2025 the Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks published a new, project-specific regulation, that allows the project to proceed upon fulfillment of the regulatory conditions. All subsequent project permitting and approval requirements remain.

Land acknowledgement

Hydro One acknowledges that the Northeast Power Line is proposed on the ancestral lands of the Robinson Huron Treaty Territory, signed with the Anishinaabe Nation and is now home to many diverse First Nations, Inuit and Métis people. Hydro One understands that Indigenous Nations have been here since time immemorial and are stewards of what many refer to as Turtle Island. We are all Treaty People and with a commitment to friendship and our pursuit of reconciliation, we are thankful to be welcomed on these lands as partners so we can improve on our past and energize our combined futures.
