Our Forestry Apprentice shares how you can spot potential tree hazards

We recently caught up with Michelle — an ISA-Certified Utility Arborist who is passionate about tree care and tree safety.

Tree safety is as important in residential neighborhoods as it is in cottage country. With Michelle’s tips, you’ll quickly learn how you can spot potential tree hazards yourself by performing a circle check.

What is a circle check?

The funny thing about trees is they can look strong and majestic from one angle and then it can be a completely different story on the other side. It’s important to perform a circle check around trees that are near homes, cars, swing sets, power lines, and other structures, to keep you and your property safe.

If you haven’t visited your cottage property for a few months, it’s especially important to assess how trees may have changed over time.

Watch the video to learn how to check trees on your property for potential hazards.

Perform a circle check with these 3 steps:

1

Look at the ground and roots

What you’re looking for on the ground are:

  • Roots lifting up
  • Cracks in the roots
  • Piles of mushrooms
  • Gaping holes
  • Big cavities
  • Crumbling wood — If you poke it and it crumbles, it could be a sign of rot

Assessing this area will tell you about the stability of the tree and could indicate overall health.

2

Look at the main stem

The first thing you want to look for if there is a lean in the tree, especially if it’s towards a structure or area that could pose a danger. If a tree is leaning towards a power line with a horizontal crack, call our emergency line immediately at 1-800-434-1235.

In the trunk and main stems you’re looking for vertical or horizontal cracks. You’ll also keep an eye out for large broken limbs that are hanging and could come down with a gust of wind.

3

Look at the canopy

Now it’s time to look up and all around. You’re looking to see within the leafy areas if there are any large dead sections. This could be a sign that the tree is in bad health.

You also want to be aware of your tree’s proximity to wires and other structures.

If your tree is ever smoking or sparking near a wire, call our emergency line immediately at 1-800-434-1235.

Did you know about our tree trimming service?

If you see hazardous vegetation around electricity lines, request a tree trimming service to help manage the issue safely and ensure it doesn't cause any power disruptions or harm.

Vegetation is an important part of our well-being. That's why our practices are designed to support the regeneration and re-establishment of compatible vegetation. Often trees and other vegetation can pose a threat to your safety or the electrical system.

Take some inspiration from Michelle and start your own dendrology leaf collection. You might be surprised by the beautiful variety in your neck of the woods.
