Region overview

The Greater Toronto Area (GTA) North Region is approximately bounded by the Regional Municipality of York, and also includes parts of the City of Toronto, Brampton, and Mississauga. The region is divided into two sub-regions: 

  • York Sub-region: This area includes Southern York area (the Municipalities of Vaughan, Markham, and Richmond Hill), and Northern York area (the Municipalities of Aurora, Newmarket, King, East Gwillimbury, Whitchurch-Stouffville, Georgina, and some parts of Simcoe County supplied from the same electricity infrastructure). 
  • Western Sub-region: This area comprises the western portion of the City of Vaughan.

Current status

The third Regional Planning cycle for this region was completed with publishing of RIP report in May 2026. It is expected that the fourth Regional Planning cycle will be initiated in 2028 or earlier with Needs Assessment phase.​​​​
