Why is this program important?

When electricity demand is high, this program will help reduce the strain on the grid, especially on hot summer days or cold winter days when many people are using their air conditioners or heating. As a participant, you can help stabilize and keep electricity cost-effective by delaying the need for system capacity upgrades.

What is a myEnergy event?

When electricity demand is extremely high in your region, Hydro One will notify enrolled participants that a myEnergy event is happening soon, and their enrolled smart device will be automatically adjusted to reduce strain on the electricity grid. In the instance of a grid emergency, an event may be conducted without prior notice.

This small change helps prevent power outages, reduces the need for expensive system upgrades and supports your community.

How will I know when a myEnergy event is happening?

How does this program differ from Save on Energy's Peak Perks program?

Hydro One's myEnergy Rewards and Save on Energy's Peak Perks program are both residential smart thermostat programs through which your device is automatically and temporarily adjusted to support the reliability of the electricity grid. myEnergy Rewards is exclusively available to Hydro One's residential and small business customers whereas Peak Perks is available to all eligible Ontario residents. You cannot participate in both programs.

I want to purchase a new smart thermostat, what should I consider?

Over time, a smart thermostat will learn your schedule and preferences to help reduce energy costs by up to 15%1 per year. Smart thermostats include convenient features like remote control access, energy reports and smart home integration.

When choosing a smart thermostat, consider:

  • Compatibility: Ensure it works with your home’s HVAC system. Some heating and cooling systems, like mini-splits or electric baseboards, may not be supported with the type of thermostat needed for the program.
  • Features and cost: Basic models are more affordable; advanced models include features like learning schedules, voice control, geofencing and motion sensors.
  • Energy benefits: Look for options that improve efficiency, lower costs and reduce your home’s carbon footprint.

Electric vehicles and chargers

Why does it matter when I charge my electric vehicle?

Electric vehicle charging can create significant demand for electricity on the grid. When many vehicles are being charged, especially during periods of already-high demand, additional strain is placed on the energy system. By shifting charging activity to off-peak hours, you can help ensure our electricity delivery remains reliable, save customers from preventable costs in the future, and allow Hydro One to modernize grid infrastructure.

How do I enrol my electric vehicle in myEnergy Rewards?

Enrolments for electric vehicles and electric vehicle chargers in the myEnergy Rewards program are currently closed. Our existing participants remain enrolled and continue to qualify for rewards.

Which EV and EV charger makes and models are eligible for the program?

Most ChargePoint Level 2 EV chargers are eligible for myEnergy Rewards. If your EV charger is not eligible for the program, you may be able to enrol your electric vehicle directly in the program. Certain models of battery electric vehicles made by Audi, Cadillac, Chevrolet, Chrysler, Hyundai, Jaguar, Jeep, Kia, Land Rover, Tesla, and Toyota are eligible for direct participation in myEnergy Rewards. You can view the full list of eligible EVs and EV chargers here.

Do my EV and my EV charger both need to be eligible in order to enrol one in the program?

No. Only the device that you enrol in the program must meet eligibility requirements. For example, if you use an eligible EV charger to charge a non-eligible, all-electric battery EV, you may enrol the EV charger in the program. Similarly, if you use a non-eligible EV charger to charge an eligible EV, you may enrol the EV in the program.

Can I enrol more than one eligible EV or charger in myEnergy Rewards?

If you have more than one eligible EV and/or an eligible EV charger, you may only enrol one device or the other in myEnergy Rewards. It is up to you which device you choose to enrol in the program. You will earn the same incentives regardless of which device you choose to enrol. If you own more than one eligible EV and own an eligible charger, we recommend you enrol in the program using your EV charger.

What is the incentive, and when can I expect it to be delivered?

You will receive an up-front incentive of $50 prepaid credit card when you enrol your eligible EV or EV charger in the program. You can also earn additional incentives of up to $60 per year for participating in peak demand events. Participation incentives are $5 per month during which the participating device(s) has been called on and responds to curtail electricity demand for at least 50% of scheduled peak demand events. Opting out of a scheduled event at any time prior to or during the event will be considered non-participation. Participation incentives will be delivered within 4 weeks of the end of each program year (December 31st of each year).

What can I expect during an event when there's high demand for electricity?

  • If your EV is plugged in and charging at your home at the event start time, charging will temporarily pause for the duration of the event.
  • If your EV's battery is less than your minimum required state of charge setting in your Optiwatt app, your charging will not be paused (this check is not available for enrolled EV chargers).
  • At the end of the event, your EV will automatically resume charging as usual.
  • You may opt out of the event at any time by unplugging your EV and plugging it back in after a few moments or via the Optiwatt website or app.

Who is Optiwatt and why do I need to create an Optiwatt account?

Hydro One has switched EV platforms and is now using Optiwatt to manage EVs in the myEnergy Rewards program.

Creating an Optiwatt account allows you to continue your participation in the myEnergy Rewards program, enabling Hydro One to shift your EV charging during times of peak demand.

Why do I need to reauthenticate my EV connection for the program?

Hydro One has switched EV platforms. As part of this transition, you'll need to securely connect your EV via Optiwatt to ensure your continued participation in the myEnergy Rewards program and receive the full benefits of the program.

How do I reauthenticate my EV connection?

Follow these steps to connect your EV and continue your participation in the program:

  • Click the enrolment link in your email from Hydro One to create your Optiwatt account.
  • Once your account is set up, enter your home address to verify your Hydro One customer status.
  • Connect your EV when prompted.
  • Review your enrolment details and program terms.
  • Click 'Submit' to complete the enrolment process and continue participating in the program.
