Frequently Asked Questions

What is the need for this new transmission line?

The West Toronto Transmission Line Relocation project is needed to support Metrolinx’s planned electrification of the Barrie Rail Corridor. This project will relocate existing overhead lines which interfere with planned Metrolinx infrastructure between St. Clair Avenue West and Bowie Avenue, just north of Eglinton Avenue West.

How did you identify the preferred route and construction method?

Initially, three open-cut route alternatives were identified within city streets to relocate this critical electrical infrastructure. Since project inception, we have been reviewing environmental and technical data, and collecting feedback on alternative routes and construction methods. Based on this analysis and information, a deep, underground tunnel route has now been identified as the preferred route.

What will the route for the new cables be?

The majority of the proposed tunnel would run underneath Caledonia Road at a depth of between 10 to 40 metres underground and would connect into new junction stations located at each end of the tunnel at Wiltshire TS and Castlefield Ave. A junction station facilitates the transition from overhead to underground lines. These sites would also serve as tunnel shafts for construction and access points for ongoing maintenance and operational needs.

When will construction start and how long will it take?

Hydro One is in the beginning, planning phases of the project. Once the required approvals are completed and it is anticipated that construction could begin in 2027 and be completed and in-service by 2031. The exact length of time work will take place will be further refined as we progress with project planning.
